In grateful memory of Fuyane |
 |
On the 6th July 2008 I was lucky enough to be able to take this photograph of Fuyane (Umzingwane). Ian Harmer of African Wanderer Safaris guided us right up close to the massive bull on foot.
The peaceful animal allowed us to watch him graze for quite a long while and at times he approached us even more closely while feeding. It was a unique and beautiful experience.

His territory was in the Matobo National Park in Zimbabwe, where he was born 25 years ago.

In spite of all intense efforts to protect the Matobo rhinos, Fuyane was killed on the 15th October 2008 in order to satisfy somebody's greed. Only the horns were taken.
It is awful for us to see these pictures although we were only privileged to spend a very short while with Fuyane. How much worse must it be for those who have commited their working lives to the conservation of wildlife!
We will keep you up to date on developments in this space. Urgent plans are being made to provide extra protection for the Matopos rhinos. We hope to be able to offer you more information on this very soon. Please do feel free to visit every now and then.
