Visit the Lowveld Wild Dog Project!

The Lowveld Wild Dog Project monitors and conserves the fascinating and highly endangered African Wild Dog in Zimbabwe’s Save Valley Conservancy. There are about nine wild dog packs in the conservancy, of which four or five are collared and known very well. The wild dogs tend to den and produce their litters during July-September which provides a wonderful opportunity to observe the dogs at their den, and if you are lucky, to see the pups as well. Wild dogs are the most endangered large carnivore in Southern Africa and live in packs. Pack sizes in the conservancy range between two and 42 individuals, with up to 18 pups per pack. The Save Valley Conservancy probably provides one of the best opportunities anywhere in the world for viewing these amazing animals. In addition, the presence of the wild dog conservation project adds another dimension to the experience, giving you the opportunity to learn more about the species and the threats they face.

In the course of 2010, we will hopefully be able to provide you with the unique opportunity to meet these fascinating hunting dogs up close and personally. You will be accompanied by a member of the Lowveld Wild Dog Project and have the chance to watch the researchers at work.
Dog sightings can not be guaranteed, but your chances are excellent as many of the dogs are marked with radio collars and are thus a lot easier to find than if they had to be tracked the "old fashioned way."
